Building a Cohesive Vision for Equitable Arts Learning

The Connecticut Arts Learning Collaborative is an emerging collective impact project with the goal of ensuring all students across the state engage in high-quality, equitable arts learning.

Arts learning has been shown to support student achievement and overall school success with its inherent inclusion of Social and Emotional Learning, Culturally Responsive Practice, and 21st century skill development. While many institutions across the state (from the state department of education down to local artist collectives) undertake efforts to bring arts learning into schools, there does not currently exist a cohesive strategy: a shared vision of what “high-quality, equitable arts learning” looks like and an actionable plan for how it should be funded, implemented, and measured.

We believe that without this kind of coordination, the individual efforts of diverse stakeholders (representing billions of dollars of investment and countless hours of effort by teachers, Teaching Artists, community organizers, funders, and non-profit staff) will continue to fall short of the progress our students need, especially those facing the opportunity and achievement gaps between students of color and those with socioeconomic challenges and their peers.
